Self help Tips - try fixing it yourself

Try Fixing These Common Issues Yourself First

Not every plumbing or boiler hiccup needs an engineer. Below are some quick, safe checks you can do yourself — and tips to keep your home’s plumbing running smoothly all year round. If in doubt, or if the problem involves gas, always call a Gas Safe registered engineer on 01865 717734.

Tips for Successful Home Plumbing

  • Avoid pouring grease or oil down the sink — it solidifies and causes blockages.
  • Use strainers in your kitchen and bath plugholes.
  • Only flush the 3Ps: pee, poo and paper. Wipes, cotton buds and kitchen roll block drains.
  • Inspect visible pipework periodically for damp patches or corrosion.
  • Avoid chemical drain cleaners — they damage seals and can corrode pipework.
  • Consider a whole-house water filter if you’re in a hard water area of Oxfordshire.
  • A plunger will clear most simple blockages before calling in help.
  • Know the location of your main water stop cock — it could save your home from flooding.
